Project Repsol Piper Bravo
For the last 4 years GGI has provided a Controls Engineer in the position of Turbine Specialist for Repsol Sinopec Resources UK on the Piper Bravo platform. This position is on a 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off basis.
The responsibilties of this role include:
The care of the four John Brown Engineering Frame 5 Gas Turbine power generating sets which have Speedtronic™ MK IV control system.
Co-Ordinating all planned maintenance from work permit creation, work order generating, parts procurement & liasing with third party vendors.
Troubleshooting of any unplanned breakdowns and returning Gas Turbines to service to ensure platform production is not afffected.
GGI provide a complete support package to Centrica Power Stations operating GE Frame 6B and 9E Gas Turbines to help maintain and ensure maximum productivity of both Power Stations. A full dedicated telephone line, flexible onsite support days and yearly maintenance is provided for a monthly fee.
Initially a complete software update to support liquid fuel decommissioning was implemented along with full EEPROM backups provided to prevent against data loss. After which 12 monthly healthcare checks were carried out on all the Gas Turbine MK IV Speedtronic™ Control Systems. This is in conjuntion with a guaranteed 24 hours, 365 day dedicated telephone line and flexible onsite support days, which help maintain against unforseen downtime of the Gas Turbines and Power Station Generation. GGI also installed a separate stand alone, fully functional Speedtronic™ MK IV Control Panel for onsite Power Station staff training purposes.
North Sea Oil Platform Turbine Control Retrofits
GGI provided project management, installation and commissioning services for 2x Frame 5 controls retrofit project on a North Sea Oil platform. The 2 original MKI Speedtronic™ Panels were replaced with Allen Bradley Control systems. The Generator Control, Protection and MCC were also replaced along with a total GT rewire and conduit replacement.
GGI also provided project management, installation, panel refurbishment, factory panel test, training and commissioning services for the 2x Frame 5 on the sister platform The original 2 MKI Speedtronic™ panels were replaced with 2x Refurbished MKV Speedtronic™ Panels and VT Scada HMI’s. An Instrument upgrade which included replacing pressure switches with transmitters was also performed.
GGI has supported Shell St Fergus on all their Frame 5002 Turbine outages since GGI’s conception in 2013.

Most recently we were involved in the install of a Lube Oil level transmitter and implementation of lube oil level rate of change software in the MK VIe Speedtronic™. This new hardware and software allow early indication of a rapid oil tank level decrease caused by major leaks in pipework or small-bore tubing. Such an event had happened prior to this modification which caused the loss of 100’s of liters of oil and subsequently the turbine had to be shutdown, cleaned and oil replenished. This all led to downtime and loss of revenue of the customer.
The new Level Transmitter and Software now adds a level of protection and early warning for the customer of any pipework failures in the future.
